Pegasus Bay Drag Racing Club ~ Leggett Road,

Some of the Competitors
Russell Lorimer ~ Ford Mustang

Russell has been with Pegasus Bay Drag Racing Club seemingly forever ( started in 1978, why, because there is no known cure for speed and some of us just have to go racing to get our fix.
Russell had travelled the length and breadth of New Zealand chasing his sport. Currently he is campaigning his 1996 Ford Mustang, fully kitted with:
Big
block Ford 557 ci
Power glide through 9” rear end
Running Hoosiers 31x14
Full racing chassis made to current NZ Drag Racing
Association rules with a “just in case” set of wheelie
bars out the back end
Strang front end
Best time to date is 9.4 @ 142mph
Previously he had a 92 Mustang running a 460 Ford
With this new set up he is expecting to run an 8 for the
Jan 29 or Feb meeting.
His 92 Mustang will come into the hands of his daughter Pip running a 351, lovely to see the next generation getting in behind the wheel of our drag cars.
Best of luck to you both for the 2011 year
and those to come.
Visiting Driver Chris ~ Chevy Impala Coupe

Chris
Well! Chris was travelling from Invercargill to the flying ¼ in Ashburton when he found out that there was a “run what you brung” drag meet in Christchurch, easy to travel another hour for more entertainment. Chris was very curious to see what times his Impala would do. He had never taken this car on a drag strip before and was happy with his best time of 14.1. The car is standard

Mark & Sally ~ Ford Falcon XD

Mark and Sally own this car but for the night it was being driven by their mate Bevan. It is very hard to work as a member of the club on race night and race you car at the same time. Thank goodness for friends. Mark and Sally have been with Pegasus Bay Drag Racing Club for a number of years now and enjoyed the build of this car.

Seems there could be a pile of wrecked ones at his

Running his Mazda RX7, series 5 with factory turbo. Keeping it attached to the ground at the back are 255x35x18 and on the front 235 x 40x18, the diff is factory standard. Best time to date is 14.3 @95mph. Geoff is going to keep it original and street driven, doing so still means that you can have great fun with the drag racing lights, staging duels and mind games often mean that a race is won as the lights come down.
For the future – get a purpose built
car for racing with a V8 or something.

Jeff ~ Replica Cobra

Jeff
And this is one beautiful car. As I walked up to it I yelled “step away from the car and leave the keys in it”, a great way to find out who is the owner. It didn’t take long to get a reply “and how much do you think the keys are worth?”
The parts were brought it from America and assembled as a labour of love taking 18 months. Jeff was interested to see what speed it was capable of, it was doing 13s but he was not going to stop till he made it into the 12s. The fist full of tickets proves how much fun he had. He does not plan to race it because that would require a whole different set up and tyres. Enjoy your toy Jeff.

Rebecca is truly new to
driving a race car but has been brought up with racing all
her life. Dad and

drag cars for years and years. Rebecca has had to wait a long time for
her chance at the sport.

Graham ~ 1970 Holden Torana

Graham
I approached the car very
quietly, the driver was looking the other way, I startled
him, much to my surprise I got a look of pain! Racing tonight
was a painful affair for Graham; something
mumbled about broken ribs, and then a lot more mumbling
trying to avoid the reason this had occurred. I did get the
words -New Years Eve and enjoying oneself. Conclusion he
had a party to remember, unfortunately he seems to have
forgotten a detail or 2. Can’t keep a good man down.

Dianne ~ Mini Cooper S

Well this one is a turn up for the books!
I was hauled over to have a look at the mini in the racing lane, “you will never guess who is driving it”. Well, no I don’t know anyone that owns a mini.
Well!!!!! Teachers Pet. For those of us with long memories - Dianne Prendergast. One of New Zealand’s foremost female racers. My first words were “what happened to your car?” Dianne raced a rail, a vastly different size to a mini. Dianne is Principal of Lauriston School, Ashburton; hence the name of her rail – Teachers Pet. Dianne and Anthony campaigned their car the length and breadth of New Zealand, consequently they have more than a dozen records to their name and plenty of hardware on the mantelpiece.

Vincent ~ Suzuki 550

Vincent
Vincent has earnt his place in drag racing, he is a long time participant in the sport. He has travelled up through the ranks of Junior and passed out the other side with many wins to his credit. He has moved away from cars to try his hand at bikes. His family have supported his change and it is all hands to the build. The bike is owned by his father Owen but that is a mere technicality, possession is 9/10ths of the law.

Simon
Just like the ones in the states, in fact that is where the body originated from, build by Murray Buckingham in Nelson. This is the first year for this combination; his previous car ran in the altered class. He has a fantastic set up, really professional looking, makes for a real crowd pleaser. If you stand still long enough and watch the team you get a real eye opener into drag racing set ups.

This is a lesson in short wheel base and lots of power. Driving this
thing take a whole lot of concentration as it attempts to
scare the pants off the driver] and throw him out the
door.
This little number has an attitude problem and has recently spat out not one but two motors. The first exited in grand style, I did ask Adam if there were any parts left over that were suitable for making into trophies for the end of year function, e.g. pistons etc. I even suggested that I needed another block for a coffee table, the answer is not printable.
The second “toss the motor”
occurred in Nelson, yeah let someone else clean up the
track!
Better luck with this one Adam.

Oh well, this man’s future is mapped out, he now has “drag racer” stamped all over him. Comes out to play once and is bitten by the “need for speed’ bug. Already setting himself up to come racing on the 30th Jan; dead keen by all reports.

Todd (Club President ) T-Bucket

This one can be
known as our Acting President, great guy, mad keen on
cars. He will
bend over backwards to help anyone. Been involved in
cars for…. well seems like centuries. He immigrated to
the north island for a number of years but has seen the
light and come home to the main land. His wife has a
really neat Ford Topolino; it is really amazing to see the
two of them get out of this little toy.
His friend had a spot of
bother with the motor in his t-bucket so Todd lent him his
trailer, of course the only way to get his t-bucket home
was … you guessed it, drive it. Straight zoomies driven on the
road, he only passed one cop. Phew!
Steven ~ Nissan Skyline R32
Steven Weatherall
Steven has
been out to play at the drags for a couple of years now;
seems to get a huge amount of enjoyment out of his car. In fact he is
our man of the moment.
Steve has just taken out our burn out competition
